I suggest you to get out of the tutorial island and go to one whatever island who remain in single player (Those that have no name and do not have a warning that it is dangerous to build on them) and start looking for the the gravedigger npc that appears randomly on some level 1 islands, buy him nails and scrap them. But, you can always scrap metal things (forks, shovels, cans, etc) for more immediate purposes. Iron deposits are found on the far east island biome (level 3, i guess).
